Southern improved to 4-0 in overtime games this season with its 88-86 double OT win over Valpo.
VALPARAISO, Ind. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team held on for an 88-86 double overtime win over Valparaiso Friday night in Missouri Valley Conference play.
"Our kids play so hard," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We don't always do whats right, but we play hard. I'm very proud of them for just gritting it out."
The Salukis (14-11, 9-5 MVC) led by as many as 12 in the first half, but found themselves behind 63-59 with 3:38 remaining in regulation. A pair of free throws by Abby Brockmeyer got Southern to within one, 63-62 with :58 seconds to play. SIU's defense got a stop that it desperately needed and Brittney Patrick found Nicole Martin for a turnaround layup with 17 seconds to play to put Southern ahead 64-63.
Valpo's Dani Franklin, who finished with a season-high 31 points, missed a layup on the Crusaders next possession and fouled Brockmeyer with four seconds to play. Brockmeyer drained both, pushing Southern's advantage to three. Valpo's Maya Meredith raced down the right side of the court and heaved in a three-pointer from half court to tie the contest and force overtime.
Martin scored five of SIU's seven points in the first overtime frame, but it was Kylie Giebelhausen who hit the biggest shot of the period. The East Peoria, Ill. native nailed a baseline jumper with :06 seconds to tie the contest, 73-73 and a defensive stop by the Salukis sent the game to a second overtime.
Kristen Nelson provided a spark off the bench for the Salukis in the second overtime, as she scored all five of her points in the period including a three-pointer off a Giebelhausen offensive rebound that got Southern back to within one, 81-80 with 2:35 remaining.
From there, the Salukis turned to their lone senior when the game hung in the balance and she didn't disappoint. Giebelhausen's fourth three-pointer of the night gave the Salukis an 83-82 lead, and on SIU's next possession, she knocked down her fifth three-pointer of the game to put Southern ahead, 86-84 with 40 seconds to go.
"(Kylie) stepped up and hit some big shots for us," Stein said. "Im very proud of her play and she played a lot of minutes tonight so we will have to get her some rest on Sunday."
Franklin wasted little time providing an answer, as her layup tied the game for the 14th time. Brittney Patrick drove to the lane on SIU's next possession and drew contact. She sank one of two freebies, as did Celina VanHyfte, to seal the win for the Salukis.
Four Salukis scored in double figures, led by 22 points from Kylie Giebelhausen. Giebelhausen was one rebound shy of a double-double, as she finished with nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal in a career-high 48 minutes.
"I am exhausted but I'm just glad we came out with the win," Giebelhausen said. "Its all worth it since we got the win so I can't complain. But I think I will need an ice bath tomorrow."
Abby Brockmeyer finished with 17 points on the strength of 8-for-8 shooting from the charity stripe, while Makenzie Silvey added 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in a career-best 42 minutes. Martin chipped in 12 points and five rebounds while Patrick added seven points and seven assists.
SIU tied a season-high with 20 assists on 28 field goals, including eight three-pointers. Southern forced 16 turnovers and improved to 4-0 this season in overtime games.
SIU missed its first seven attempts from behind the arc to start the game and Valpo led 17-16 after the first quarter. Southern opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run highlighted by a transition three-pointer by Giebelhausen that put SIU ahead, 23-17.
An 8-1 run by the Salukis followed, as SIU took its largest lead, 31-19 with 5:46 to play in the first half. Franklin went on a 9-0 by herself to will the Crusaders to within three, 31-28 before a 3-ball by Giebelhausen and a layup by Lauren Hartman gave Southern a 36-30 lead at the half.
The two sides were tied 50-50 after three quarters. Five-straight points to open the fourth quarter by Brockmeyer gave SIU a five-point edge but a 13-4 run by the Crusaders gave the home team a 63-59 lead with 3:38 to play.
The Salukis are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 18 where they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on the Loyola Ramblers. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
