CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois wraps up its regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it plays at Evansville in a game televised live on ESPN3. With an SIU win or an Illinois State loss at Loyola, the Salukis will clinch the No. 2 seed at next week's MVC Tournament. If SIU loses and Illinois State beats Loyola, the Salukis will be the No. 3 seed. Prior to this year's second-place finish, the highest SIU has placed in the last 10 years is third (2008 and 2017). It last won the MVC title in 2007.
The Salukis are 2-5 all-time versus Evansville at the Ford Center, with wins coming in 2014 and 2017. Head coach Barry Hinson has a 19-11 mark all-time versus the Purple Aces, including 4-7 while at SIU. In the first meeting between the teams this season, Southern Illinois overcame a four-point deficit in the final two minutes to slip past Evansville, 65-63, in Carbondale on Jan. 3. In the final 90 seconds, Evansville made three turnovers and Dru Smith missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.
