The SIU Women's Golf team will compete in the GCU Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon University this weekend.Â
Â
The tournament which is held at the GCU Golf Course in Phoenix, Az., will feature 15 teams including the Salukis. Four of those teams are ranked within the top 150 according to Golf Stat.Â
Â
"The competition in this field is legit for mid-major play," said Head Coach Alexis O'Brien. "We can't make very many errors if we are to place near the top."
Â
According to Golfstat's rankings as of Feb. 20, Portland State is currently ranked no. 90, GCU is ranked no. 130, South Dakota State is no. 145 and Northern Colorado is no. 150. Southern is ranked no. 152 in the standings.Â
Â
The Salukis are also playing with a new line-up combination this weekend. Senior Hanna Netisingha is still leading the Salukis in the one spot, sophomore Erica Kerr, freshman Emilyee McGiles, senior Alice Ho and sophomore Lili Klekner-Alt will be competing for the Dawgs. Junior Sun Jung compete as an individual.  Freshman Moyea Russel is out due to injury.
Â
While it is a new line-up for Southern this season, all players have seen the green at some point in the fall season either as an individual or in the line-up.Â
Â
O'Brien says she is confident that this line-up will give her the results the Dawgs are looking for at this tournament.Â
Â
"Our strategy going in is just to hit our approach shots close to the hole and give us chances to make putts," O'Brien said. Â "We need to start holing putts and wanting to birdie. We settle for two-putt pars too many times and we are much better than that. Once the putts start dropping again everyone will see success."
Â
The GCU Invitational will have a shotgun start of 36 holes at 10:00 a.m. C.T. on Saturday and will continue on Sunday at 9:00 a. m. C.T. with the last 18 holes. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.Â
