Kern and Ingram will throw at the 2018 NCAA Indoor T&F Championships on March 9-10.
Saluki throwers Jared Kern and Isaac Ingram have qualified for the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas, beginning Friday, March 9.Â
Kern, who was the runner-up in the shot put at the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships over the weekend, qualified for the national indoor meet for the second-straight season. The Machesney Park, Ill. native will enter the meet with the eighth-best mark in the nation at 65'-5.5" (19.95m), which he threw at the EIU Friday Night Special on Feb. 16.Â
Kern is one of eight throwers who qualified in the shot put for a second-straight year. Of those eight returning from last season's competition, six earned All-America First Team honors a year ago, including Kern with his fourth place finish. The defending NCAA indoor shot put champion, Mostafa Hassan of Colorado State, returns to defend his crown while last year's runner-up, Denzel Comenentia of Georgia, is also in this year's field.
Ingram, who won his second-straight weight throw title at the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships, is a first-time national qualifier. The Harrisburg, Ill. native qualified for the national meet with his lifetime-best mark of 71'-7.5" (21.83m) set at the Indiana Relays on Jan. 26. Ingram has won the weight throw at six of the seven meets he has competed at this season and will enter the national meet with the 14th-best mark in the nation.
The men's weight throw competition is comprised of mostly upperclassmen, as 14 of the 16 competitors are either juniors or seniors. North Carolina State's Josh Davis enters the national meet with the top mark in the nation at 78'-2" (23.83m) and is one of six repeat qualifiers in this year's field. Davis finished fifth in the weight a year ago while Michigan's Grant Cartwright, who was the national runner-up in 2017, also returns.
Kern will compete on Friday, March 9 at 7:20 p.m. while Ingram is set to compete on Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m. Live results can be found here.
