03/30/2018 | 1:48:00 | Track and Field
The Southern Illinois track and field team will head to Sacramento, Calif. for the Mondo Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State. SIU is one of eight women's teams and one of seven men's teams set to compete at the one-day meet on Saturday, March 31.Â
Off to Better Weather
The Salukis, who won 12 event titles at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic despite cold and rainy conditions, will soak up plenty of rays in Sacramento, Calif. where the high is 80 degrees for Saturday with a slight breeze around six miles per hour to be expected.
Mondo Team Challenge: Surveying the field
The first inaugural Mondo Team Challenge pits seven men's teams and eight women's teams against one another in a team scored event with the top-8 finishers scoring. UC Irvine, UC Davis, Portland State, Long Beach State, Sacramento State, North Dakota and SIU will compete for both the men's and women's team titles, while the University of Nevada-Las Vegas will compete on just the women's side. Southern is sending 44 student-athletes (22 women/22 men) to the meet, which gets underway  Saturday beginning with the women's hammer throw at 9:30 a.m. The men's long jump will kick off at 10 a.m. and running events begin at 11:45 a.m. starting with the women's 4x100 relay. The final event of the meet, the men's 4x400 relay, is scheduled for 3:20 p.m.Â
Nice to see you again
Saturday's meet will serve as a homecoming of sorts for SIU Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Kathleen Raske and Associate head coach/jumps coach Terry VanLaningham. Raske, a 1990 graduate of SIU, served as the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country at Sacramento State for 12 seasons and was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year 16 times. The Hornets' men's and women's teams combined to win 17 Big Sky team championships during Raske and VanLaningham's tenure and finished in second place eight times. During VanLaningham's tenure with the Hornets, he coached three NCAA All-Americans, two USATF Junior All-Americans and his athletes' claimed 47 individual Big Sky championships.
Plenty of PRs at Bill Cornell SC
Southern notched 13 personal-bests at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on Mar. 24, led by Matthew Bigelow, who tallied PRs in both the 110 meter hurdles and the high jump. Charlene Helton, competing at her first meet this season, recorded a more than 12-foot PR in the javelin to win her first collegiate event title while Nate Dyer recorded personal-bests in both the hammer throw and the discus at his first outdoor meet in nearly two years after he redshirted the 2016-17 outdoor season.
