After shooting a 312 in the opening round, the Salukis pounced into contention for their first Missouri Valley Conference Championship since 2007 in Monday's second-round.
Â
Southern shaved a whopping 21 strokes off of its first round score with a team-score of 291. The Salukis are currently in second, just three strokes behind the leaders, Missouri State.
Â
The team tied for the third best second round score in the Saluki record book.  If this was just a two-round tournament, The Dawgs combined score of 603 would rank eighth in all time low 36-hole score.  It was the lowest score this season by six strokes.Â
Â
Head Coach Alexis O'Brien said she was speechless with how the team played today.
"It takes a team of five to compete at this championship and all five showed up when we needed to," O'Brien said.
Senior Hanna Netisingha (+5) moved up the leaderboard five spots, finishing the day tied for third with Jessie Stead from Loyola and Stine Pettersen from Missouri State. Netisingha shot even par, leaving her a combined five over par, only three strokes off of first place. Â
Â
Right behind Netisingha was senior Alice Ho (+6) and freshman Moyea Russell (+8).  Ho ended the second round tied for sixth, one over par, only one behind Netisingha.  Russell shot a combined 152 placing her tied for 11th. Â
Â
Freshman Emilyee McGiles (+10) shot one under par, a career low. She ended tied for 17thwith a total score of 154.  Sophomore Erica Kerr (+13) rounded out the line-up for the Salukis.  Kerr finished the day tied for 26thwith a score of combined score of 157.Â
"This team can flat out play," O'Brien said. "In my seven years here at SIU, this is the team who will get it done tomorrow. But, we have one round to play so we can't get ahead of ourselves. We will just stay in the moment and never give up."
Â
Southern looks to hunt down the Lady Bears tomorrow in the final round of the MVC Championship. It is set for an 8:30 a.m. start.Â
