SAUGET, Ill. - Southern Illinois fell in an early 8-0 deficit in a 10-5 loss to Saint Louis on Tuesday evening at GCS Ballpark.
Combined, the teams used 15 pitchers in the bullpen game. Saint Louis (33-17) got to SIU early, scoring four runs in the first inning and two more in the second to jump out to an early 6-0 lead.
"The first two innings, we gave up six free passes and we were down 6-0," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "We've done that so many times lately, and you don't give yourself much of a chance when you're down."
Saint Louis scored at least one run in each of the first six innings of the game. After the Billikens took an 8-0 lead, the Salukis outscored SLU 5-2 the rest of the way, but SIU suffered its sixth-straight loss.
Southern's offense came in the middle innings. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Drew Curtis came through with a two-run single. Then, in the sixth inning, Nikola Vasic hit a three-run homer that pulled SIU within 9-5 at the time.
"We battled back. We put some decent ABs together and battled throughout the game," Henderson said.
SIU collected 10 hits in the game but left 10 on base in the loss. Southern's best chance to get back in the game came in the seventh inning when it put two on with nobody out, but a strikeout and a double play ended the threat.
Eight of the nine spots in Southern's order reached base at least one time. Drew Curtis (3-for-4) and Jared Kengott (2-for-5) had multi-hit days for the Salukis. SIU put a runner on base in eight of the nine innings.
On the mound, Alex Gutermuth struck out five over two innings, and Justin Yeager pitched SIU's only perfect inning with a 1-2-3 seventh.
SIU wraps up the regular season with a three-game series against Bradley at Itchy Jones Stadium. First pitches on Thursday and Friday nights are set for 6:30 p.m., and Saturday's Senior Day game starts at 2 p.m. SIU will honor its eight seniors prior to Saturday's game.
