Maloney and Hurley were both honored as the Most Valuable Athletes at the 2018 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Indiana State University. Maloney helped account for 40 points on the strength of wins in the 200m dash, 400m dash, 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay while Hurley won both the MVC discus and the hammer throw titles to go along with a fourth place finish in the shot put.
Shafiqua Maloney |Â So. | Sprints |Â 3.45 GPA | Geography and environmental resources
Shafiqua Maloney had a historic weekend for the Salukis at the 2018 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as the sophomore sprinter won four MVC titles and took home both the Most Outstanding Track Athlete and the Most Valuable Athlete honors. Maloney won the 200m dash, the 400m dash and helped SIU win both the 4x100 and the 4x400 relays for the second-consecutive year. All told, Maloney helped score 40 of SIU's 160 points and set new facility records in three events (200m, 400m, 4x400). It marked just the fifth time in Missouri Valley Conference history that a female sprinter has won both the 200m and the 400m at the outdoor conference meet and in doing so Maloney became the first Saluki to win the Most Outstanding Women's Track Athlete award since it was first handed out in 2001. She was also just the fourth female athlete in program history to claim the conference's Most Valuable Athlete honor, given to the meet's top point scorer.
Ricky Hurley |Â Jr. | Throws |Â 3.34 GPA | Management
Ricky Hurley was named the Most Valuable Male Athlete at the 2018 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as the sophomore thrower won two MVC titles and totaled 25 points. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native won the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 210'-6" (64.16m). He followed with a win in the discus at 182'-3" (55.54m) and narrowly made it to the podium in the shot put after he threw 58'-10" (17.93m) to finish in fourth place. He is just the third men's thrower in MVC history to win the discus and the hammer throw at the same outdoor meet, and the first Saluki to have done so since Ron Harrer in 1987. In addition, Hurley is just the fourth Saluki to win take home the Most Valuable Athlete award since it's inception in 2001, and it marked the first time that a program has won two-straight Most Valuable Men's Athlete honors at the outdoor conference meet since 2009.
