Saluki Track and Field to close out regular season at Billy Hayes Invitational

The Southern Illinois track and field team will close out the regular season at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, on Friday, May 4. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. with the women's hammer throw and the men's javelin while track events start at 4 p.m. with the men's 110 meter hurdles.
Last week in review
The Salukis turned in 15 personal-bests at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational last weekend. Southern tallied four lifetime-bests in both the men's discus competition and the 3000m steeplechase. Ricky Hurley, Kyle Kling, Sam Sikon and Nate Dyer each set PRs in the discus on Saturday, including a more than 20-foot improvement by Sikon. In the 3000m steeplechase, Chris Edwards, Cain Hassim and Theo Hassim each bested their previous PRs while Megan Krolak clocked the fifth-fastest time in school history at 10:50.10 to also notch a lifetime-best.
Top-10 school marks
Southern set five top-10 school marks at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational and have recorded 14 total during the 2018 outdoor season. Reigning MVC Women's Track Athlete of the Week Tyjuana Eason ran a personal-best 11.66 in the 100m dash, which was the fifth-fastest time in program history. Â Eason also helped SIU's 4x100 relay win with the second-best time in school history at 44.94. Krolak's PR in the 3000m steeplechase gave the Peru, Ill. native her first outdoor top-10 school mark while Ricky Hurley added to his total after he set outdoor personal-bests in the discus and shot put. Hurley ranks fifth in school history in the discus (184'-11"), sixth in the hammer throw (206'-6") and eighth in the shot put (60'-3.75").Â

Hurley is the latest Saluki with three outdoor top-10 individual school marks. The reigning MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week is just the 17th Saluki, and eighth Saluki male, to notch three top-10 individual school marks. He is the first to do so since Olympian DeAnna Price, who in addition to her school record in the hammer throw, also finished her career ranked fourth in the discus and eighth in the shot put. Carbondale, Ill. native Malaikah Love has the most top-10 school marks in individual events (not including relays) of any Saluki, as she holds school records in both the triple jump and the heptathlon, ranks second in the long jump and ninth in the 100m hurdles.

Of the 17 Salukis who rank in the top-10 in three or more individual events in Southern's history, six (Chris Bunyan, Denise Blackman, Michael Franks, Bill Hancock, David Lee and Rhonda McCausland) have been inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame. Six of the remaining 11 have either recently became eligible for enshrinement or have not yet been out of school for the requisite five years.Â

The Saluki men currently rank 17th in the Midwest Region, and are joined in the top-20 by MVC foes Illinois State (No. 9) and Northern Iowa (No. 15). The Saluki women rank 15th in the Midwest Region and are joined in the top-15 by Illinois State (No. 14).

According to the most recent USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings, the Salukis rank in the top-15 of three events. Southern's highest ranking comes in the men's shot put, where SIU sits at fourth with a combined mark of 236'-8" (72.15m). The Saluki men's shot putters finished the indoor season ranked No. 1 in the event. SIU also ranks ninth in the men's hammer throw (762'-5" // 232.39m) and 12th in the women's shot put (191'-7" // 58.41m). Southern is tied with Northern Iowa for the most appearances by a MVC school on the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings, as the Panthers also rank in the top-15 of three events. Illinois State (2), Indiana State (1) and Drake (1) also make appearances on the list.

Athletes of the Week

It marks the 11th time in 13 tries (84%) during the 2017-18 season that a Saluki has been honored as the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Overall, SIU has earned 19 conference athlete of the week honors this season.
