SIU will take on nine teams that played postseason volleyball a year ago, including the No. 2 ranked Florida Gators.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois volleyball team and second-year head coach Kari Thompson has announced its schedule for the 2018 campaign.
The Salukis will play nine matches during the 2018 season against teams that advanced to postseason play a year ago, including the National Runner-Up Florida Gators.
Southern opens the 2018 regular-season at the Cardinal Classic on Aug. 24-25. SIU will take on IUPUI, who went 16-14 in the Horizon League and were one of 32-teams to advance to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). The Salukis will also tangle with the Louisville Cardinals, who made their 26th NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2017 after they went 24-7 and defeated Syracuse in five sets in the ACC Tournament title match.
SIU then hosts the Saluki Invitational in a field that features Miami (Ohio), Alabama A&M and Murray State. Miami (Ohio) swept Western Michigan to win their first MAC Tournament title since 2007 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while Alabama A&M earned a berth to the NIVC Tournament and Murray State lost a five-set thriller to Austin Peay in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship match.
Southern will then travel to Flagstaff, Arizona to take part in the Northern Arizona Invitational. The Salukis will tangle with Cal State Northridge, Northern Arizona and Florida. The Gators went 30-2 a year ago and fell in four sets to Nebraska in the national title match. Florida graduated four senior starters from that squad but welcome a talented recruiting class that is ranked No. 2 nationally and features Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year Thayer Hall.
SIU will play in its final non-conference matches of the 2018 season at the Arkansas State Tournament from Sept. 14-15 and will take on Arkansas State, Central Arkansas and Jackson State. The Redwolves went 20-11 in the Sun Belt last season and advanced to the second round of the NIVC Tournament.
The Salukis open an 18-match Missouri Valley Conference slate on Friday, Sept. 21 against Bradley before hosting Illinois State on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Southern will host the Northern Iowa Panthers, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, on Oct. 12. The defending MVC Champion Missouri State Lady Bears, who beat the Panthers in the MVC Tournament title match, come to Carbondale on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The Salukis close out the 2018 regular season when they host Valparaiso for Senior Day on Saturday, Sept. 17. The MVC Tournament, which will be hosted by Missouri State, is set for Nov. 22-24.
Season tickets, as well as single-match tickets, can be purchased online or by calling 877-SALUKIS.
