The Southern Illinois men's golf team opens the 2018-19 season at the Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate, hosted by Indiana University. The 13-team tournament will begin with 36 holes at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday and the final 18 holes starting at 7:30 a.m. CT on Sunday.Â
"We are very excited to begin our season this weekend at the Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate," SIU head coach Justin Fetcho said. "These guys have been working hard at practice and the qualifying for this event was very intense."
Peyton Wilhoit, Luke Gannon, Frankie Thomas, Tom Cleaton, Matthis Besard, and Sean Mullan will travel for the Salukis, with Mullan playing as an individual. The tournament will be played at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville, Ind., with a Par 72 and 7,174-yard layout. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.
"We have a combination of experienced players traveling with some of our new players, so I think this will be a good week for our upperclassmen to show their maturity and leadership skills in helping mentor some of the new guys with their first Division I tournament," Fetcho said. "I've been impressed with the discipline that our new guys have shown in qualifying and at practice and I believe they will step up and be ready to go compete."
Fetcho starts his fifth season as the head coach of the Salukis. The program has improved in the end-of-year rankings in each of his first four seasons, improving more than 100 spots in the national rankings from the year before he arrived. The Salukis won the first MVC championship in program history in 2016 and look for a second in 2019. Last year, Peyton Wilhoit became the first SIU player in nearly 50 years to earn an at-large selection to the NCAA Regionals as an individual.Â
"This group has all the talent to be successful," Fetcho said. "We just have to stay patient and just focus on ourselves.  There were lots of good scores in qualifying and now we are ready to go and compete in the first tournament of the year."
The season-opening tournament starts a challenging national schedule for the Salukis. Southern's fall schedule starts with four-straight tournament hosted by major conference teams and ends with the program's first-ever trip to Hawaii.Â
