Little Rock, Ark. — The Southern Illinois men's golf program continues its fall-season stretch at the Little Rock Invitational from Oct. 21-22 (Monday-Tuesday). Little Rock will host the 54-hole event at the par 72, 7,326-yard Chenal Country Club.Â
"We are looking forward to getting out and competing again this week," head coach Justin Fetcho said. "We have been able to get some good work in at home the last two weeks on short game and some mental things. I'm ready to see us put that to the test in a tournament environment this week."
The first 36 holes will be on Monday, while the final round will be played on Tuesday. Both days will feature a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. CT. Live stats for each round can be found here.Â
Southern is one of 17 teams set to compete at the invite. Five teams in the field sit top-100 in the latest golfstat.com rankings. SIU, along with Campbell, Middle Tennessee and Texas Tech competed at the 2019 NCAA Regionals. Missouri Valley Conference opponents Bradley, Illinois State and Missouri State will also be in action in Little Rock. The three schools finished second through fourth place at the 2019 MVC Championships.Â
The five-man Saluki lineup will consist of Riley Klingelberg, Frankie Thomas, Matthis Besard, Andrew Thornton and Vikar Jonasson. Thomas and Besard have competed in all four tournaments of the fall season. Klingelberg, Jonasson and Thornton have played in three tournaments.Â
The Salukis last competed at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, North Carolina, where they finished ninth out of 15 teams. Klingelberg led SIU in the individual standings, as he placed 19th overall (73-68-75 = 216). The performance earned him MVC Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career as a Saluki. Thomas finished close behind Klingelberg at 26th (74-71-73 = 218). It was the fourth-straight tournament that the senior finished in the top half of the individual standings.Â
"If we can stay patient and disciplined on this golf course, we will be successful," Fetcho said. "The talent is there, we just have to continue to sharpen up our mental approach and the results will happen on their own."
