CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team beat Dyersburg State 7-2 in a 14-inning exhibition game on Friday evening at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Salukis led 5-0 after nine complete innings and allowed just one earned run in 14 innings.
"When you break down the three main phases of the game, we played another solid 14 innings," head coach Lance Rhodes said. "Every pitcher came in and really competed in the strike zone. Defensively, we were really sound, with a couple highlight-type plays in the outfield. Offensively, we had a lot of hard contact against some very solid pitching."
In the initial nine innings, SIU pitching allowed just three hits while striking out 14. Blake Begner and Mason Hiser started the dominant outing with four scoreless innings. Including last week's scrimmage vs. John A. Logan, the Begner-Hiser duo combined to strike out 19 and allowed just three hits over 10 innings this fall.Â
The Salukis had traffic early in the game but left the bases loaded twice. Freshman infielder Sam Hojnar hit a two-out, two-run homer to give SIU a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Nick McAlister stole two bases to set up another run in the sixth. Nick Neville and Tony Rask drove in runs in the ninth inning, as well. Kyle O'Brien went 2-for-3 with a walk for a multi-hit game. Defensively, Addison Fugitt and Brad Hudson made impressive catches in the outfield.Â
"It has been great over these two games to see the guys compete against outside competition, and it's shown us the areas we need to address moving forward," Rhodes said.
Trey McDaniel earned a six-out save in the opening nine innings, striking out two without allowing a hit. Bennett Shoptaw, Michael Fossali, and Corey Mitson combined to bridge the gap between Begner, Hiser and McDaniel with three scoreless middle innings.Â
SIU completed the fall season 2-0 with wins over John A. Logan and Dyersburg State. The Salukis open the spring season on February 14 at Jackson State.Â
