RALEIGH, N.C. — The Southern Illinois men's golf program finished in ninth place out of 15 teams at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. Tournament host NC State (-22) claimed the title by four strokes over Campbell (-18) at Lonnie Pool Golf Course.
"Our team played some really good golf in rounds two and three, but we struggled finishing them off," head coach Justin Fetcho said. "I think we got it to about 7-under par or 8-under par at one point on each day and finished off shooting 3-under and 4-over. We showed glimpses of our talent this week, but we have to continue to strive to be mentally tough and disciplined for each shot. We let too many shots slip away in the closing stretches to compete consistently against strong competition."
The Salukis began round three in ninth place and stayed put in the standings after firing a final round of 292 (+4) for a three-round total of 874 strokes (+10). Southern managed to place ahead of Maryland and Jacksonville, who each entered the weekend top-100 in the latest golfweek rankings. Virginia Tech finished a mere two strokes in front of SIU at 8-over par.
Freshman golfer Riley Klingelberg led the Salukis in the individual standings, as he finished at a tie for 19th overall at even par. Klingelberg has placed top-20 in both of his tournament starts this season.
"Riley had a good week, as it was evident by his top-20 performance," Fetcho said. "He had a tough finish in today's round, which puts a damper on things, but he played really solid golf for the majority of the tournament. He's still learning and maturing, so he still has some things we can work on. But his ceiling is very high and he has the ability to have a bright future in front of him."
Frankie Thomas tied for 26th (+2) to take the second-best placing out of six SIU golfers. Andrew Thornton tied for 54th (+8), but carded a team-best 71 in round three to move up 21 spots. Tom Cleaton shot 74 (+2) on the final 18 holes, which was his best total at the three-round tournament.
Southern is off next week, but returns to action the following week for the Little Rock Invitational (Oct. 21-22).
