Trio of Salukis impress on Day One at Ka'anapali Classic

LAHAINA, HI — The Southern Illinois men's golf program is tied for 13th out of 20 teams at the conclusion of Day One at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational. Kansas and Oklahoma sit atop of the leaderboard through 18 holes at 16-under par.
As a team, Southern fired a round-one total of 282 (-2) on the Royal Ka'anapali Course. SIU was in sixth place at 6-under par through the first nine holes, but shot 4-over par on the final nine holes to drop seven spots to 13th overall.
The Saluki trio of Matthis Besard, Sean Mullan and Andrew Thornton impressed on Day One.
Besard started hot with an eagle on hole one and birdies on holes three, six and nine to finish the front-nine at 4-under par and tied for fourth place out of 117 golfers. The sophomore shot even-par on the back-nine to finish at 4-under par (68) and tied for 12th overall.
Mullan and Thornton each carded 3-under par (68) in round one, good for 23rd in the individual standings. Mullan tallied one eagle and four birdies, while Thornton had a team-best seven birdies. Thornton's seven birdies was the fourth-best total in the field.
Riley Klingelberg also finished in the top half of the standings at 57th, as he shot even-par (71).
Round-two play will commence tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CT (8:30 a.m. HT). Live scoring can be found here.
