For the second-straight year, the Southern Illinois men's golf program will conclude its fall season in Lahaina, Hawaii, at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational. The University of Hawaii will host the 54-hole event from Nov. 1-3 at Ka'anapali Golf Club on the Royal Ka'anapali Course.
"We are looking forward to competing this week in Hawaii," head coach Justin Fetcho said. "We have some players here that have experience on the golf course from last year, so that will be helpful as we start to prepare and game plan for what the course will present during the tournament days. This will be the final event we play as a team for several months, so we want to leave here with some momentum as we head into the offseason."
Southern will golf 18 holes Friday through Sunday with a 8:30 a.m. HT shotgun start on each day. Live stats for all three rounds can be found here.
The Ka'anapali Classic will feature several of the best teams in the country. Out of the 20-team field, eight teams are top-50 in the latest golfstat.com rankings. Among the eight teams is Oklahoma, who currently sits No. 1 in the rankings. An additional nine teams competed in NCAA Regional action last season.
Fetcho selected Frankie Thomas, Matthis Besard, Riley Klingelberg, Andrew Thornton, Sean Mullan and Birgir Magnusson to compete in Hawaii. Magnusson will be the lone Saluki competing as an individual. Besard and Mullan made the trip to Hawaii last year, while the remaining four will be making their first appearance at the tournament.
SIU placed 17th (+20) out of 20 teams last year in its first-ever appearance at the Ka'anapali Classic. Former Saluki Peyton Wilhoit finished tied for 42nd overall (-2) to lead SIU in the individual standings.
"Things have been up and down this fall, but I believe we are getting better and improving," Fetcho said. "We have to continue to work on being stronger mentally and having discipline and commitment on each and every swing. If you combine that with a solid short short game, that's a recipe for success."
