The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a four-set decision (13-25, 25-23, 18-25, 16-25) to the first-place Northern Iowa Panthers Friday night inside the McLeod Center.
The Salukis (12-14, 4-8 MVC) hung tough with the first-place Panthers, as Southern led at least once in all four sets. SIU led early in the first set, taking a 7-5 lead on a kill by Savannah Sheridan that was coupled with a Panthers error. UNI, however, answered with 11-straight points to build a commanding lead.Â
SIU rebounded in the second set, as it scored four of the first five points of the frame and led by as many as seven (16-9). The Panthers answered to tie the set at 23-all, but Southern forced a pair of UNI errors, including with a double block on set point by Alayna Martin and Lindsey Paulsen to knot the set score at 1-all. It marked just the 10th set that the Panthers have lost in conference play this season.
Southern led early in both sets three and four, but Northern Iowa used significant runs near the midway points of both frames to take the match.
The Salukis were led once again offensively by reigning MVC Player of the Week Hannah Becker, who put down 12 kills for her sixth-straight double-digit kill output. Rachel Maguire tallied seven kills, 14 assists and 11 digs while Savannah Sheridan added seven kills and a career-best 12 digs.Â
Sheridan was one of four Salukis to notch double-digit digs Friday night. Laura Rojas led the way with 21 digs and two assists, which marked just the second time in her career that she has tallied back-to-back 20-dig outputs. Abi Fitzpatrick chipped in 13 digs while Maguire totaled 11.Â
At the net, Emma Baalman tallied seven total blocks, including a career-high three solo stuffs. As a team, Southern out-blocked UNI, 9-to-5.Â
The Salukis are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Drake Bulldogs. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
