
Salukis host Skyhawks for Tuesday night clash

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-2) hosts the UT Martin Skyhawks (2-4) Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Salukis have won two-straight, and three of their last four games, coming into Tuesday's contest against the Skyhawks, who were picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference's Preseason Poll.Â
All-Time vs. the Skyhawks
• SIU trails UT Martin, 9-11, in the all-time series that dates back to 1973.
• The two teams last met on Nov. 9, 2018, with the Skyhawks earning the 95-94 victory at Elam Fieldhouse.
• The home team has won each of the last three meetings.
• Southern's last win over UT Martin came at home- an 82-74 win on Nov. 10, 2017.
• The Skyhawks have been to either the NCAA Tournament or the WNIT in seven of the past nine seasons.
Last time they met - 11/9/18 (95-94 UT Martin win)
• The Salukis found themselves down 65-45 with 7:07 to play in the third quarter, but Southern went on a furious 29-7 run over the next nine minutes to take its first lead of the second half, 74-72 with 8:08 to play in regulation.
• Southern took its largest lead of the fourth quarter, 84-79 with 3:36 to play but the Skyhawks answered with an 11-0 run to build a six-point advantage to effectively seal the win.
• Makenzie Silvey scored a career-high 29 points in the loss while Abby Brockmeyer added 20 points and 11 rebounds.
• Silvey is averaging 22.0 points per game in two career games against the Skyhawks, while Brockmeyer is averaging 14.5 points/9.0 rebounds in two career meetings with UT Martin. Nicole Martin comes into her fourth career matchup averaging 8.0 points and 6.3 rebounds against the Skyhawks.
SIU vs. the Ohio Valley Conference
• The Salukis are 2-0 this season against Ohio Valley Conference opponents and have won five-straight over OVC programs.
• In 187 lifetime meetings against OVC schools, the Salukis sport a .721 winning percentage (135-52).
Stein vs. the OVC
• Cindy Stein is 29-12 all-time against OVC schools during her 21 seasons as a head coach.
• Stein sports a .500 or better career record against six OVC schools and a 3-4 record versus UT Martin.
Off to a good start
• With SIU's win over St. Louis, the Salukis improved to 4-2 on the season, which matched the best start through six games during Cindy Stein's seven seasons as head coach.Â
• It is the best start for the Salukis since the 2014-15 season, when SIU also went 4-2 and finished with a 7-4 non-conference record.
December to remember
• SIU went 4-0 last season in the month of December- which marked just the third perfect December in school history and first since 1987.
• Southern has won six-straight December games dating back to the 2017-18 season.
Getting to the basket
• Through six games, SIU leads the Valley, and ranks 14th nationally in field goal percentage (47.5%).Â
• SIU shot 55% from the field in its win at Eastern Michigan- which marked the third time already this season that Southern has shot 50% or better from the floor. SIU's three games shooting 50% or higher is as many as it had during the entire 2018-19 season.
• Southern is 14-6 under seventh-year head coach Cindy Stein when making at least half of its shot attempts.Â
• Since 1988, SIU holds an .811% (86-20) winning percentage when shooting 50% or better.
• The Salukis won 18-straight games when shooting 50% or better from 1993 through 1997.
Upping its average
• The Salukis currently rank third in the Valley, and 35th in the nation, with a 78.2 points per game average.Â
• Southern scored 85 points in its win over Eastern Michigan, and it marked the fourth time in six games that SIU has scored 75 or more points in a game.Â
• Southern is doing so by ranking in the top-25 nationally of both field goal and three-point field goal percentage. SIU ranks 22nd nationally in 3-point FG percentage at 38.5-percent.
Protecting the Rock
• Southern ranks second in the Valley, and 34th nationally, in fewest turnovers with 83.Â
• SIU's 13.8 turnovers per game are second to Loyola (12.8) in the Valley.Â
Points per 100 possessions
• Southern is averaging 108.6 points per 100 possessions- the best average in the Valley and 18th-best in the nation.
• SIU is doing so thanks to a .92 points per play average- the best average in the MVC and 22nd-best in the nation.Â
Leading the league
• Makenzie Silvey scored 14 points in SIU's win over St. Louis on Wednesday on 42-percent (6-of-14) shooting- which marked the 16th-straight game (dating back to last season) in which she has reached double figures.
• The Glen Carbon, Ill. native is averaging 20.3 points per game- which leads the Valley and ranks 18th nationally.
• Silvey became just the 30th player in program history to record back-to-back 20-point efforts and the first to do so since Nicole Martin in 2018 earlier this season.
• She also became the 34th Saluki to score 850-plus points in a career and is 23 points shy of 900 for her career.
Martin leads the way
• Nicole Martin scored a team-high 18 points in SIU's win against St. Louis.
• Martin's 1,130 career points are the 21st-most in school history. She needs five points to crack the top-20 in program history.Â

• The Salukis have a pair of juniors, Makenzie Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer, who are approaching the 1,000-point milestone.Â
• Silvey sits at 877 career points while Brockmeyer scored her 700th career point in the win over St. Louis and currently has 703 career points.
Exclusive Club
• Abby Brockmeyer led the Salukis with a season-high 11 rebounds in the win over the Billikens on Wednesday, which marked the second time this season, and 19th time in her career, that she has snagged double-digit boards.
• Her 11th rebound against St. Louis was also her 500th career rebound.Â
• The junior forward is just the 7th player in program history, and first since Kylie Giebelhausen, to record 700 career points/500 rebounds/75 assists/75 blocks and 50 steals in a career.
Moving on up
• Brittney Patrick has 282 career assists- which is the 14th-most in a career in program history. She is nine assists shy of passing Sue Faber for 13th place. With 18 assists, she would become just the 13th Saluki to dish out 300 assists in a career.
• Patrick is also two steals shy of becoming the 30th player in school history to reach the century mark in career steals and would be just the 16th player with 250-plus assists and 100 steals.
All four of SIU's wins this season have come when the Salukis:Â
