Three Salukis were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic team on Wednesday — the most for the program since 2013. Center Jacob Marnin (4.00 GPA/Criminal Justice) and safety Jeremy Chinn (3.55 GPA/Excercise Science) were named to the first team, while fullback Jacob Garrett (4.00 GPA) was a second-team selection.
A two-time Academic All-American who has carried a perfect 4.0 GPA from undergraduate to grad school, Marnin started all 12 games for SIU this year and helped pave the way for a pair of 1,000-yard rushers (D.J. Davis and Javon Williams Jr.) for the first time in school history. Southern's offense ranks No. 12 in the nation in rushing yards per game (233.4) and No. 35 in total offense (418.6).
Chinn was named to the league's All-Academic team for the third time in his career. A first-team All-Conference pick, he is a Buck Buchanan Award finalist and has already accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Chinn led the team with four interceptions and was third with 71 tackles.
Garrett was the lead blocker for Southern's dominant rushing attack and also caught five passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. He played in all 12 games and started 11 and was a key reason why Saluki running backs recorded 12 100-yard rushing performances (6 by Williams, 5 by Davis, 1 by Romeir Elliott), which was the most in the nation.
