SIU visits Memphis for three-game set

The Southern Illinois baseball team travels to Memphis for their second three-game road series of the 2019 season. The series, originally scheduled from Feb. 22-24, was moved due to inclement weather. There will now be a single game on Saturday, Feb. 23 at a time to be determined and a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 24. Game two of the Sunday doubleheader will start 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one. AROUND THE HORN

- The Salukis lead the all-time series, 18-13, and have won four of the last seven.
- SIU lost two of three in their last road series at Memphis in 2017. All three games were decided by one run.
- Both the Salukis and Tigers began the season the 1-2. SIU's mid-week matchup at Belmont scheduled for Feb. 19 was moved to Feb. 27 due to weather. Memphis dropped a mid-week home matchup against Murray State to fall to to 1-3.Â
- Of the 68 Division I freshman who pitched at least four innings on opening weekend, SIU pitcher Matthew Steidl was No. 1 in strikeouts per nine innings with 15.8.Â
- Freshman Sam Grace and Matthew Steidl held Nicholls batter to 2-for-20 with 10 strikeouts in their first career appearances during the opening weekend.Â
- Nikola Vasic and Will LaRue lead SIU and the MVC with two stolen bases.Â
- SIU has six stolen bases on the season. Last year, the Salukis ranked fourth in the nation with 131 stolen bases.Â
- The Salukis opened the 2019 season with a three-game series at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. last weekend.Â
- Southern won 6-5 in game one, to improve to 3-7 on opening day since 2010.Â
- SIU lost the next two games, 3-2 (14 inn.) and 7-3.Â
- Game two was the first 14-inning outcome since 2002, when SIU won 4-3 over Wichita State.Â
- On the weekend, Alex Lyon and Ian Walters had a team-high four hits and three runs batted in.Â
- The SIU pitching staff held Nicholls batters to a .204 batting average over the three-game span.
