Martin, Silvey earn All-MVC honors

Martin earned a spot on the All-MVC First Team while Silvey was named to the All-MVC Honorable Mention team.
ST. LOUIS — Nicole Martin and Makenzie Silvey were selected to Missouri Valley Women's Basketball All-Conference teams, the league announced Wednesday. Martin earned her second-straight All-MVC first team honor while Silvey was named to the All-MVC honorable mention team for the first time in her career.
Martin is the sixth player in program history to repeat as a All-MVC First Teamer, as she joins Kylie Giebelhausen, Nikki Gilmore, Kasia McClendon, Dyana Pierre and Rishonda Napier as the only Salukis to repeat on the All-MVC First Team. It also marks the sixth-straight season that Southern has placed at least one on the All-MVC first team.
A Preseason All-MVC selection, Martin has scored in double figures in 21 of SIU's 29 games this season, including five games with 20-plus points. One of the most athletic post players in the Missouri Valley Conference, Martin finished the regular season ranked in the top-10 of the league in four statistical categories, including third in field goal percentage (53.1%), tied for third in offensive rebounds per game (2.7), fifth in rebounds per game (7.6) and sixth in points per game (14.9). Martin has seven double-doubles on the season, including the first 15 point/15 rebound game by a Saluki since 2016. The junior forward most recently became the seventh active MVC player to reach the 1,000 career points plateau and was also named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention team
Silvey earned the first all-conference honor of her career after she put together one of the best sophomore campaigns in program history. The Glen Carbon, Ill. native has scored in double figures in 26 of SIU's 29 games, including five games with 20-plus points. One of the better shooters in the Valley, Silvey finished the regular season ranked in the top-15 of the Missouri Valley Conference in six statistical categories, including third in three-pointers per game (2.3), fourth in minutes played per game (33.0), seventh in steals per game (1.7), eighth in scoring (14.3), eighth in field goal percentage (.378) and 15th in assists per game (2.4). Statistically, she is having one of the best seasons for a sophomore in school history as she ranks in the top-10 among sophomores for points scored (5th, 416), scoring average (5th, 14.5), three-pointers made (2nd, 66) and steals (4th, 47). Her 14.3 points per game, meanwhile, are second amongst sophomores in the Missouri Valley Conference. Silvey was also named a MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team selection
Martin, Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer (MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team) will be honored at on Thursday, March 14 at the annual awards ceremony between the first two games of the 2019 MVC Tournament at the TaxSlayer Center. SIU is the sixth seed in the tournament and will take on the third-seeded Northern Iowa Panthers at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15.
