AROUND THE HORN
- Southern Illinois hosts SIU Edwardsville for a 4 p.m. game at Itchy Jones Stadium on March 19. The sister schools are meeting for the second-straight year in mid-week play.
- Last year's SIU-SIUE game was the first meeting for the schools since 2010, when the Salukis swept a three-game series. Before that, the programs had not met since 1992.Â
- SIU is 3-1 in mid-week games this year. The Salukis are 2-0 at home in mid-week play, beating Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri last week.
- Mason Hiser will make his fourth start of the year. Last week against Austin Peay, Hiser had his best career outing, tossing 8.0 innings of two-run ball against the Governors. He struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.Â
- SIU ranks third in the NCAA in stolen bases at 3.0 per game. The Salukis and Wofford are the only two programs to have three players ranked in the top-55 nationally in stolen bases. SIU, Wofford and Southern University are the only three programs with four players in the top-110.Â
- Last weekend against Illinois, SIU went 7-for-9 on stolen base attempts against an Illinois club that had only allowed five stolen bases in its first 13 games combined.Â
- SIU is off to a 7-1 start at Itchy Jones Stadium this year. The Salukis swept Western Illinois before winning tow of three against Northern Illinois the next weekend. SIU followed that up with 3-2 and 4-1 wins over Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri, respectively. SIU is hitting .275 at home, and the pitching staff is limiting opponents to just a .197 average. SIU had a lopsided 17-2 loss to Northern Illinois—outside of that one game, SIU pitching has a 1.86 ERA at home this year and has limited opponents to a .147 batting average, .171 slugging percentage and .216 on-base percentage.Â
- SIU sophomore infielder Grey Epps has been on a tear, reaching base safely in 13-straight games. After starting the year 3-for-21, Epps is 17-for-45 (.378) over the last 13 games. In that span, Epps has seven doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 RBIs. He is slugging .644 and reaching base at a .442 clip.
