CARBONDALE, Ill. — D.J. Davis, a junior from Pompano Beach, Florida and a member of the Saluki Football team, received the Harry Bobbitt Spirit Award for the 2018-19 academic school year. During the 2018 season, Davis averaged 6.28 yards per carry and earned the team's Offensive Player of the Year award.
"D.J. is a student-athlete who takes his academics very seriously," said head football coach Nick Hill. "He has over a 3.0 GPA and is our most explosive athlete on offense and is a dynamic leader on our team."
"This scholarship means the world to me," said Davis. "I am one of the few members from my family to be awarded with a scholarship."
While at SIU, Davis has received many honors and has been a leader among his teammates. From Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team to Sophomore All-American (HERO Sports), he proved to be an important asset for the Saluki football program.
"D.J. is a sold leader," said Hilary Wittenborn, academic coordinator. "He performs at the highest level on the field and in the classroom."
During the 2018 season, Davis was named 2nd Team All-MVFC and led the conference and ranked 14th in the nation in all-purpose yards per game with 140.3. He rushed for 1,118 yards which was the most by a Saluki running back since Jewel Hampton in 2011.
"I do not know where I would be without this scholarship honestly because my parents wouldn't be able to afford paying for my school," said Davis. "This scholarship allows me to take stress off my family by doing something I love to do."
Harry Bobbitt was a defensive back for the Salukis from 1961-63 who tragically died the year before his senior season. He was a Carbondale native and served as one of the three team captains for the Saluki football team. He was an outstanding athlete and an enthusiastic player. His No. 23 jersey is retired.
