Southern Illinois starts a five-game road swing with a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday at Eastern Illinois.
The home team has won five-straight games in the SIU-EIU series. The Salukis won 5-3 last year in Carbondale. The Panthers won the last game in Charleston, 10-7.
Eastern Illinois is led by Jimmy Govern, who is hitting .333 with 10 doubles, seven homers and 28 RBIs. Govern is one of five Panthers who are hitting .330 or better this season.
EIU has played just six home games this year, but the Panthers have scored at least nine runs in four of their six home games. The last time SIU and EIU played in Charleston, EIU won a 10-7 game.
SIU starter Mason Hiser is 3-0. The Salukis are 5-1 as a team in his six starts this year and have won four-straight.
Southern is 6-1 in mid-week games this year and have won five-straight mid-weeks. Dating back to the start of the 2018 season, SIU is 16-4 in mid-week games.
SIU has stolen 80 bases, which ranks sixth in the nation. Will LaRue (26th), Addison Fugitt (43rd), Nikola Vasic (45th) all rank in the top-50 nationally in stolen bases per game.
SIU has hit 23 sacrifice flies, which ranks fourth the nation. Ian Walters ranks second in the nation with seven sacrifice flies.
Trey McDaniel ranks fifth in the NCAA with nine saves, which also leads the Missouri Valley Conference. SIU bullpen coach Ryan Netemeyer led the MVC in saves each of the past two seasons. If McDaniel leads the MVC in saves this year, SIU will be the first Valley program since Wichita State (1997-01) to have a player leads the MVC in saves three-straight seasons.
