The SIU women's golf team finished the first day of the Red Bird Classic in fourth place after a historic second round, shooting even par as a team for the first time in program history on a par 72 course. IUPUI (+10) is currently in first place ahead of Xavier (+11). Southern Illinois is coming off a historic season: winning their first MVC Conference Championship since 2007 and advancing to the NCAA Regionals.
"We spent a lot of time working on short game throughout the last couple weeks and focused on staying positive through the round," said SIU head coach Coach Kaufman. "Im so proud of these girls. They impressed me in that second round. If we continue to have the same frame of mind as we did today, I have no doubt we will keep climbing up the leaderboard."
Through two rounds, the Salukis shot 302-288 with a total of 590 (+14) at the historic Weibring Golf Course, a 6,010 yard, par 72 golf course for the tournament. Junior Moyea Russell sits tied at sixth as she carded her best score in the second round, shooting a 70 (-2). Senior Erica Kerr (+2) has a total of 146 and freshman Ayanna Habeel (+3) carded her best score in the second round, shooting a 71 (-1) with a total of 147. Juniors Emilyee McGiles (+8) and Rosemarie Bundy (+11) round out the team with scores of 152 and 155.
The final round will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. The weather is forecast to be mostly sunny with a high of 85 F. Live scoring will be available on BirdieFire.
