Salukis Wrap Up Day Two of Jim Green Invite

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Southern Illinois Saluki track and field program competed in the second day of the Jim Green Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky, on Saturday and saw a great deal of success against some stiff competition.
"It was nice to see the group away from home and on the road," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Rosalind Joseph said. "It was important to see how they handled themselves and, more importantly, how they could compete on the road. We definitely have some things that we need to work on, but that's exactly why we're here. We had some great individual efforts and I know that this group is going to come back to campus and will push to continue to get better."
Day two got started in the circle, which saw the Salukis post two top-five finishes. Junior thrower A'veun Moore-Jones placed third with a toss of 15.55 meters (51'0.25"), falling four feet short of Ohio State's Adelaide Aquilla for the event title. Fellow junior Kayleigh Conlon placed sixth with her best toss of 14.76 meters (48'5.25"). On the men's side, Clint Meyer continued his early season success with a toss of 18.47 meters (60'7.25"), a mark that placed the senior in third for the day.
Sticking with the field events, senior Willie Rodgers took fifth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.20 meters (49'10.5"), falling just three-quarters of an inch shy of his career-best. Kyle Zeinemann and Gary Glenewinkel closed out the field events for the Salukis with fourth and ninth place finishes in the pole valut. Zeinemann's top mark of the day came at 4.75 meters (15'7"), while Glenewinkel posted a mark of 4.45 meters (14'7.25").
In the track events, senior Tyjuana Eason placed seventh in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.61 seconds, while also taking part in a Saluki 4x400 meter relay team that took 11th against a tough field. Savannah Long took 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 58.47, while DeA'yvion Smith took 17th.
On the men's side, Corey Sherrod took ninth in the 400 meters as the sophomore clocked in at 48.85, finishing .42 seconds ahead of fellow Saluki Johnny McGluen in 10th. Freshman Terry Simuel ran in his first collegiate 400 meter and took 12th with a time of 49.59.
Closing out the day was the men's 4x400 meter relay squad that consisted of McGluen, Sherrod, Simuel and Omar Rodgers. The quartet of Salukis finished the day in seventh, crossing the finish line in 3:18.08.
The meet was an overall success for the Salukis, as Southern saw seven athletes post top-five finishes in addition to numerous personal-bests. Following the meet, the Salukis will head back home and regroup before hosting the Don DeNoon Invite on Jan. 24-25.
