ST. LOUIS — Southern Illinois redshirt junior forward Gabby Walker was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Walker scored the game-winning basket in SIU's 70-68 upset win over No. 17 Missouri State on Friday, as her layup with :01.3 seconds to play sealed Southern's first victory over a ranked opponent since 1991. The junior transfer finished with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting and added a steal and an assist in 13 minutes of work.
This marks the first Valley weekly award for the Salukis this season, and the first MVC Newcomer of the Week honor in almost two years (1/22/18).
Walker and the Salukis are on the road this weekend with a game on Friday at Evansville (6 p.m.) followed by a contest at Indiana State (2 p.m. ET) on Sunday.
