Kayla Schiera Wins 3,000 Meter at Day One of Indiana Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Participating at the Indiana Relays for the first time in her career, Kayla Schiera earned her first collegiate win by running for a lifetime-best 10:01.31 in the 3,000 meter on Friday night.
The Sandwich, Ill. native edged her nearest competitor by less than a tenth of a second to record the lone Saluki victory on the evening. Her finish places her sixth overall in the Missouri Valley Conference for the event. Grace McDurmon also set a personal-best in the event with her time of 10:14.83, which placed her seventh in the event, while Rachel Anderson took 16th.
Tyjuana Eason took ninth in the 200 meter finals after clocking in a time of 24.79 seconds. The Kankakee, Ill. native also took part in the 60 meter preliminaries but failed to advance to Saturday's finals after finishing 10th.
In the circle, Alexis Roberson placed sixth in the weight throw and threw for a lifetime—best 70'-10.50" (21.60 meters), shattering her previous mark of 69'-07.50 and in doing so, moves up into sixth on SIU's top-10 list. Emily Kern also recorded a PR after tossing for 60'-10.5" (18.55 meters), to finish 11th, while BriYanna Robinson took 21st. Nikki Freeman was the final Saluki competing in the event and took 25th with her toss of 15.38 meters (50'-5.50").
Madison Meyer finished 12th in the 200 meter preliminary round but found success in the long jump by finishing seventh with a mark of 18'-7.75" (5.68 meters). Freshman Britney Mosby also competed in the long jump and placed 23rd with a best jump of 16'-1.75" (4.92 meters).
On the men's side, Chris Edwards continued his hot start to the season by placing third in the 3,000 meter with a PR of 8:28.91. Freshman JT Hodges also competed in the event and fared well by placing 14th with a personal-best time of 8:49.45.
The Saluki men's hurdlers had themselves a day, as all four that participated in the 60 meter hurdles advanced to Saturday's finals. Solomon Wilson was the top finisher for SIU in fourth, while Theo Phipps finished fifth. Jaylen Galloway took sixth, while Kyle Lind rounded out the Salukis with his eighth place finish.
In the men's weight throw, Ricky Hurley threw for a season-best 19.46 meters (63'-10.25") to place seventh. Peyton Taylor took 14th after throwing for 54'-01" (16.48 meters).
Over at the pole vault, Kyle Zeinemann took 13th after clearing 15'-3.75" (4.67 meters), while Gary Glenewinkel took 19th after posting a clearance of 14'-04" (4.37 meters).
In the mile, Travis Hart took 15th after running for a PR of 4:29.99. Trevor Thompson placed ninth in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:27.77.

Day two of the Indiana Relays get underway at 7:30 a.m. CT with the 60 meter hurdles in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Field events get underway at 8:05 a.m. CT with the heptathlon's high jump.
