OPENING TIP
- SIU hosts Murray State on Friday night at Banterra Center for the Charles Helleny Tip-Off Classic.
- SIU is trying to snap a three-game losing streak to Murray State. The Racers are the preseason co-favorites in the OVC with Austin Peay, and Murray State is coming off a 30-point win over Austin Peay on Tuesday. The Racers led that game by 23 at halftime.Â
- Friday's game is named for Charles Helleny, who was known as "Mr. Southern Illinois." A 1957 SIU alum, Charles generously donated the fourth-largest gift in Saluki Athletics history. He passed away in August 2019, and SIU's first home game against a Division I opponent each season is named in his honor.
- SIU has started 2-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008-09 and 2009-10.
- Marcus Domask (21 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg, 2 bpg, 57% FG) and Ben Harvey (19 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.5 apg, 57% FG, 50% 3FG) were named the Missouri Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday.
- Notes from a 102-61 win over Quincy on Sunday...
- SIU's 102 points were tied for the most by the program since 1998 (SIU also scored 102 in 2017).Â
- SIU's 41-point margin of victory was the program's largest since a 55-point win in 1994.
- All 12 available Salukis played and scored. Five Salukis were in double-figures.
- SIU held the Hawks to 37.7% shooting, marking the 13th time in 34 games under head coach Bryan Mullins that SIU held its opponent below 40% shooting.
YOUNG DAWGS
- 87% of SIU's scoring this season is from freshmen and sophomores. 70% is from the sophomore class: Marcus Domask, Lance Jones, Ben Harvey, Trent Brown, Steven Verplancken Jr., and Sekou Dembele.
- Ten of the 14 players on SIU's roster are underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores).
- After J.D. Muila and Will Keller suffered season-ending injuries, SIU has only two available upperclassmen (Anthony D'Avanzo and Jakolby Long).
- Entering the season...
- Jakolby Long was the only player on the roster who had played in more than one season of Division I basketball.
- Only five players on SIU's roster had played more than 100 career minutes in Division I basketball.
- SIU ranked 9th of 10 in the MVC for career Division I minutes and games played on its roster.
