SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team battled to the final whistle in an 88-57 loss against the No. 17/24 Missouri State Lady Bears on Saturday evening in the JQH Arena. With the loss, the Salukis and Lady Bears split the season series at 1-1.
The Salukis led by two early but struggled offensively late in the first quarter. Missouri State locked in a double-digit lead by the end of the first that it never surrendered. Southern was unable to get within 11 points for the rest of the game.
"They were making everything today," said seventh-year head coach Cindy Stein. "Defensively, we needed to be able to come up with a lot of stops. Especially early when they had momentum on their side. We've just got to continue to get better."
The Lady Bears aggressively crashed the glass en route to holding a 41-20 advantage in rebounds. Missouri States' Jasmine Franklin pulled down 14 boards in 20 minutes of action.
"They're a great rebounding team," said Stein. "We just had mishaps along the way with boxing out, which we worked on all week. It's just one of those things. We didn't have it today. It's a tough atmosphere to play in. We have got to use this as a learning experience and continue to get better and fight. We just have to work a little bit harder."
Southern held its own against the starting-five for Missouri State, but struggled against what is considered the deepest bench in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Lady Bears bench combined for 47 of their 88 points, out-scoring Southern's by 30.
"Some of our struggles on the defensive end led to struggles on the offensive end," said Stein. "Then, some of our offensive struggles led to defensive struggles. Every game in our league is tough and we've got to be ready for every single one of them."
Nicole Martin led the Salukis with 14 points and two steals. Martin got going early with a quick six points in her first six minutes of action. Abby Brockmeyer and Brittney Patrick both chipped in nine points, while Brockmeyer tied a career-high with three steals. SIU totaled 15 steals- it's fourth-straight game with double-digit takeaways.
The Salukis return to action on Friday, Feb. 21 when they host Indiana State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
