
Women's team set to compete at MVC Championships

The Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team is set to compete at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships from Feb. 19-22 in Columbia, Mo. Missouri State will host the four-day event at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. A live stream and live results via Meet Mobile will be available for each session. CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Salukis have been a top threat in the Valley since joining in 1994. Southern has claimed the conference title nine times and most recently won it all in 2016. The Salukis won the MVC Championships five-straight years from 1997-2001. Southern has also placed runner-up at the championship-event 10 times, which includes the last three seasons. SIU has never finished beyond third place in its 25-year span in the MVC.Â
TOP DAWGS
Eleven Salukis head into conferences with one or more top-five MVC mark. Senior captain Laura Carver has led the way with a team-high three top-five times. Newcomers Lucia Romero and Sierra Forbord have also impressed, as both swimmers hold a pair of top-three times. In the diving ranks, twin sisters Beibei Ji and Baobao Ji each possess a top score and runner-up score.Â

The Saluki women racked seven weekly conference honors during the regular season. The diving duo of Beibei and Baobao each earned Diver of the Week twice. Carver tabbed Swimmer of the Week twice in the first half of the season. Romero earned her first-ever conference honor in the last week of the regular season.Â

BREAKING RECORDS
The Salukis broke three school records in the pool during the regular season. Carver started things off at the SIU Invitational (11/14) with a record-breaking time of 2:02.13 in the 200-yard individual medley. Romero shattered the 100-yard backstroke school record with a mark of 54.64 against nationally-ranked Mizzou (1/31). In the same meet, the quartet of Romero, Sarah Vogt, Rita Naude, and Forbord swam an SIU-record time of 1:42.70 in the 200-yard medley relay.Â
PRE-CHAMPIONSHIP POLL
SIU was projected to finish second in the MVC pre-championship coaches poll. Missouri State, the winner of the past three championships, was picked first with seven first-place votes. Southern was the only other team to receive a first-place vote.Â

SIU returns eight individuals that earned All-MVC honors last season. Seniors Payton Parman, Samantha Parsons, Beibei and Baobao, and Carver have been All-MVC selections two or more times. Another five Salukis in Deven Speed, Juliana Carvalho, Abigail Young, and Naude hold one All-MVC honor.Â
DOMINATING THE VALLEY
The Salukis finished with a 5-1 record in dual meets against MVC competition. SIU closed the season with three-straight meet victories. The women's team also bested Evansville at the SIU Invitational. MSU handed Southern its lone conference loss in November (11/9).Â
