CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Southern Illinois University Saluki track and field program saw three seniors be crowned conference champions in addition to advancing multiple individuals to event finals after day one of the 2020 Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Madison Meyer got the day started for Southern with the pentathlon, where the Carterville, Ill. native took home title after winning the long jump and posting four top-three finishes to post a lifetime-best 3,907 points in the event. Meyer wins the event for the second-straight year and becomes only the third Saluki in program history to win the event at the conference meet in consecutive years. Meyer's 3,907 points are a new personal-best, while her time of 2:23.31 in the 800 also clocks in as a new personal-best. Meyer later would score points for the Salukis with her third-place finish in the long jump, posting a mark of 5.83 meters (19'-1.5").
Alexis Roberson followed Meyer's win with a title-winning performance in the women's weight throw. The Jefferson City, Mo. native won the event over fellow Saluki Emily Kern by over seven feet for Southern's 12th title in the event in program history and its first since 2017. Roberson's wildly successful senior season paired with tonight's MVC winning toss makes her a near-lock to advance to the NCAA National Championships on Mar. 13-14.
Ricky Hurley took home the 2020 men's weight throw title after throwing for a season-best mark of 20.88 meters (66'-6.5"). Hurley took home gold after finishing third at last year's conference meet. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native bested his nearest competitor, UNI's Kyler Yodts, by less than three inches to take home the title. Hurley becomes the 16th Saluki to win the conference title and the program's sixth-straight, dating back to 2015.
