Southern Illinois safety Jeremy Chinn posted some of the top numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind. today, testing among the 95th percentile of all players at the event.
The 6-3, 221-pound athlete impressed NFL scouts and coaches at the Senior Bowl in January, and the physical attributes he demonstrated today should boost his NFL Draft status even higher. Chinn ran a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash, recorded an 11'6" long jump and a 41-inch vertical jump.
"They're not surprising numbers," said SIU head coach Nick Hill. "We've since this for four years, especially in the last year, we've tested him and he's broken about every record there is to break here. You also have to go and perform on that stage on national TV, and not everybody can do that."
Chinn ended his storied SIU career with 243 tackles, 13 interceptions, 31 passes defended and six forced fumbles. He was a Consensus All-American and Buck Buchanan Award finalist in 2019, and SIU went 7-3 with Chinn on the field.Â
"Some team is going to be extremely lucky that's going to get him," said SIU defensive coordinator Jason Petrino. "You talk about a guy who's going to invest and put everything he can mentally, physically to be the best."
The 2020 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 23 with the first round.
"Everything that (NFL) shield stands for and they want from a person and a player, that's what they're going to get (from Chinn)," Hill said.
