AROUND THE HORN
- Southern Illinois is 1-1 in mid-week games this season, having lost earlier in the year to Belmont (4-3) before picking up a win against Murray State (2-1) last week. - Southern and Austin Peay are tied in the all-time series at 7-7. The Salukis last victory over the Governors came on Mar. 12, 2019 in a 3-2 decision in Carbondale. The Salukis won four-straight over Austin Peay over span of nearly two years (4/10/13-3/25/15).Â
- SIU went 1-1 against Austin Peay in mid-weeks last season.
- Blake Begner will start on the mound for the Salukis. He's making his first start since Feb. 23, when he went one-third inning against Seattle University and gave up five earned runs on four hits.Â
- The Salukis won their second road series of the season after exploding for a 22-5 win over Morehead State in the series finale on Sunday. Southern become the first team to beat Morehead State in a series in their own park since 2018. The Saluki bats were hot all weekend long, as Southern collected 49 hits over the series.
- SIU's 25 hits on Sunday were its most since 2004.Â
- Senior infielder Phillip Archer became the first Saluki in 10 years to record four extra base hits (3 doubles, 1 triple) on Feb. 29.
- Senior infielder Ian Walters leads the team in batting average (.429) and is tied for team leads in hits (21), doubles (5), triples (1) and RBIs (12). He has recorded a hit in each of the past nine games, dating back to a Feb. 16 matchup with Jackson State.Â
- Nick Neville extended his on-base streak to 12 games after going three of six from the plate. The South Carolina transfer knocked in five RBI's in the win, notching a new career-high.Â
