The Southern Illinois men's golf program heads west for the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz. Michigan will host the three-round tournament from March 7-8 at Desert Mountain Outlaw Course.
"The team is ready to get back out and compete in Arizona this weekend," head coach Justin Fetcho said. "We have been working hard in practice since we returned home from Florida State. It will be good to get back in a tournament environment again."
Southern will play its first 36 holes on Saturday in a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start. The Salukis will tee off for their third and final round on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available each day on golfstat.com. Scoring is expected to be updated every six holes.
Once again, the Salukis will be surrounded by several of the top teams in the nation. Ten of the 12 competing teams rank in the Golfstat top-100. Vanderbilt (20) and Northwestern (37) each rank top-50 nationally. However, SIU is one of only three teams that competed at the 2019 NCAA Regionals.
This will mark Southern's first appearance at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. The Salukis last competed in Arizona during the 2016-17 season at the Arizona Intercollegiate. SIU placed 16th in the 18-team field. Current Saluki Frankie Thomas finished 69th in the individual standings.
Fetcho selected the five-man lineup of Matthis Besard, Sean Mullan, Tom Cleaton, Birgir Magnusson and Frankie Thomas to compete in Arizona. Markus Wilhelmsen will compete as an individual. On the season, Thomas leads SIU in stroke average (72.3) and under-par rounds (7). Besard ranks second on the team in both categories.
"Physically, our team is good. We just have to find ways to be consistent and have a stronger mental game when things are not going the way we want. Adversity is always going to hit and we need to do a better job when it hits us throughout the course of a round. If we can have a strong mentality during the entire 54 holes, we will be successful this weekend."
