Salukis run-rule Huskies for sixth-straight win

Southern scored seven runs in the first and added three in the second.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University softball team won its sixth-straight game Friday on day one of the Saluki Invitational, as the Salukis scored 10 of their 11 runs in the first two innings to defeat the Northern Illinois Huskies, 11-1 in five innings.
Nine different Salukis tallied a hit in the win, led by Jenny Jansen's 2-for-3 day with two doubles and a RBI. Katelyn Massa hit her second home run of the season, while both Carlee Jo Clark and Aubree DePron notched their first collegiate base hits.
Southern played clean defense to back a gem from senior starting pitcher Claire Miller. Miller allowed just one base runner through four innings.
"I felt like we played all phases of the game pretty well today and it showed," 21st-year head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "I was really pleased that our kids just kept scoring runs and kept battling offensively."
Miller improved to 2-1 in the circle this season after she went the distance and scattered four hits- all singles- and struck out two. She had the benefit of plenty of early run support, albeit it meant she had to wait quite some time between innings.
Southern sent 12 hitters to the plate in a seven-run first inning and seven hitters to the dish in the second inning to go ahead 10-0.
"It's hard to get in a rhythm when your offense is scoring so many runs that you're sitting for a long period of time," Blaylock said. "I was really proud of Claire."
Jansen's RBI-double in the first opened the scoring and Massa brought Jansen in to score with her two-run shot. Sidney Sikes brought in a run with a RBI-single and Susie Baranski's two-run, RBI-double put Southern up 7-0.
Miller threw a one-two-three second and SIU put up another crooked number in the bottom half of the frame. Ashley Wood led off with a single, Massa drew a four-pitch walk and Megan Brown brought both in with a RBI-single to right. Southern then manufactured a run via a double steal, as Maris Boelens took second and Kyleigh Decker scored from third.
Southern added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth when DePron's first collegiate base hit scored Boelens from third.
The Huskies briefly got to Miller in the fifth, as they loaded the bases with no outs. Southern turned a 6-4-3 double play and Miller induced a pop-up to get out of the jam and end the game.
The Salukis have now won six-straight and 12 of their last 13 games.
"We just want to keep rolling," Blaylock said. "With conference play coming up we just want to keep playing well over our next three games."
Southern will play two on Saturday. The Salukis will take on the DePaul Blue Demons at 12:15 p.m. before tangling with Western Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
