CARBONDALE, Ill. – The men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Normal, Ill. to take part in the MVC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Illinois State University on Friday, Oct. 29.
This will be the second time this fall that the Salukis will travel North to Normal for a meet. The teams previously competed in the Redbird Invite on September 17. The women finished that meet with a 7th place finish in the team standings, while the men finished in 10th place. The MVC Championship will run on the same course, which is located at Weibring Golf Course. The women's 6K race will kick off the championship event with a start time of 1:00 PM. The men's 8K race will immediately follow with a 2:00 PM start time. The awards ceremony will be held after the conclusion of the final race. Both races will have full coverage from the Valley on ESPN, and can be streamed through ESPN3.
The SIU women's team will look to carry the momentum from the last race at the Bradley Pink Classic where the team placed 12th in a packed field. The women's team will be able to run their top group, relying on some of the veterans to pace the way for the salukis. One of those veterans is Kayla Schiera. The saluki senior has one win on the fall season (16:55.6 at UT Martin), a total of three top-10 finishes, and closed out the regular season with a 34th place time of 21:41.0. Stephanie Anthonies (61st/22:11.6), Josie Brown (82nd/22:23.0), and Rachel Anderson (93rd/22:29.2) rounded were also able to finish within the top-100 of the Bradley Pink Classic for the salukis.
On the men's side, it's about getting healthy and being able to run the top group for one of the first times this season. Ethan Senti has been a bright spot for the Salukis this regular season. At the Bradley Pink Classic, Senti was the top Saluki for the third straight meet with his 17th place finish of 24:29.2. Dawson Smith finished less than 10 seconds behind Senti to secure a 22nd place finish for the men's side, with a time of 24:39.0. Noah McIntyre, who has also been a leader for the men in the regular season, was forced to miss the last race due to an ankle injury.
