
Saluki Track and Field Wraps Up Second Day of Conference Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Southern Illinois University Saluki track and field program saw a trio of Salukis capture individual titles, in addition to multiple SIU student-athletes advance to event finals on the second day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Saturday.
Heading into the final day of conference competition, the Saluki women are in first place with 96 team points. Illinois State (56 points) and Indiana State (56 points) are tied for second, while Northern Iowa (53 points) sits in fourth. On the men's side, Southern currently sits in seventh place with (15 points). Northern Iowa (73 points), Illinois State (68 points) and Indiana State (60 points) are the top three teams through day two.
Senior Madison Meyer captured her third-straight title in the pentathlon with 3,340 points, making her the first Saluki in program history to win the event in three consecutive years. Meyer and Indiana State's Mia Mackenzie exchanged leads throughout the day, but Meyer prevailed after winning the long jump, the pentathlon's final leg, at the end of the day. Meyer edged out Mackenzie by 46 points to win gold.
Senior Erin Diemer secured her first MVC individual title after winning the pole vault after clearing a mark of 3.91m (12'-10"), a mark that ties the Shelbyville, Ind., native for fifth in program history. Northern Iowa's Cierra Laux fell just short of Diemer by two inches.
In the shot put, A'veun Moore-Jones continued the longstanding tradition of stout Saluki throwers by winning her first indoor MVC title with a throw of 15.86m (52'-00.5"). Kayleigh Conlon placed second in the event, giving the Phoenix, Ariz., native All-MVC honors for the second-straight year. BriYanna Robinson rounded out the Salukis in the event by placing seventh with a mark of 14.35m (47'-01").
On the track, freshman Iaunia Pointer advanced to a finale for the second-straight day, this time in the 60 meter dash where she claimed third overall with a time of 7.64 seconds. On Sunday, Pointer will also be competing in the 200 meter finals, an event she previously qualified for on Friday with a time of 24.89.
Pointer wasn't the only Saluki to qualify for Sunday's round of finals, as senior Savannah Long qualified in the 60 meter hurdles after clocking in at 8.81 seconds. The DeKalb, Ill., native is seeking her second-straight individual conference title, as she was a part of the Saluki 4x400 meter relay squad that was crowned champions at the 2020 MVC indoor championships.
In the triple jump, Trinity Daniels earned All-Conference honors for the second-straight year after placing second with a mark of 11.80m (38'-08.75").
On the men's side, Kyle Lind advanced to Sunday's 60 meter finals after placing fourth in today's preliminary round with a time of 8.19 seconds. Jelle De Jong sits in second in the heptathlon ahead of tomorrow's final rounds.
