Saint Charles, Mo. — Southern Illinois women's golf tied for sixth place after carding 349 in Tuesday's final round of the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Championship at Bogey Hills Country Club. The Salukis battled the par-71, 5,987 yard course on a day that saw near-freezing temperatures, rain, gusts of wind, and snow.
Evansville (942) took home the championship trophy in dramatic fashion to advance to the NCAA Regionals after defeating Northern Iowa (942) in a sudden death tiebreaker on the 18th hole, the third-such finish in Valley history and first since 2003.
The Salukis closed the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a final score of 967 to tie with Bradley (967), trailing Illinois State (944), Missouri State (948), and Drake (959). Rounding out the field behind SIU was Indiana State (981), Loyola (991), and Valparaiso (1039).
Despite the inclement weather, senior Moyea Russell shined on the final day of play, firing 79 to finish in 11th place with a score of 235 (+22). Russell was one of five in the 50-player field to shoot in the 70s on Tuesday, an achievement in itself. The effort didn't go unnoticed as Russell earned her first All-Conference honor and finished the year with a 77.36 stroke average, ranked first for the Salukis.
Including Russell, Southern Illinois had three top-25 finishers. Fifth-year Erica Kerr shot 86 on Tuesday to finish in 14th place at 238 (+25), picking up a team-high 5 birdies over two days. Freshman Janie Samattiyadeekul posted a final found of 83 against the elements to finish at 244 (+31) tied for 22nd place.
Senior Emilyee McGiles carded 101 on a challenging day to finish at 256 (+43) in 41st place and sophomore Ayanna Habeel was forced to withdraw before the start of the final round with an injury.
