Ricky Hurley Sets Program Hammer Throw Record at Rock Chalk Classic
04/30/2021 | 10:00:00 | Track and Field
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior thrower Ricky Hurley closed in on the best hammer throw mark in the history of Saluki track and field after connecting on a throw of 68.33m (224'-2), breaking the six-year old record formally held by Curtis Wideman. The new program record also stands as the greatest men's hammer throw mark in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference.
Hurley's record-breaking mark placed him sixth against a field of throwers that included three who hold top-15 marks in the NCAA this season. Hurley slowly built up to the record, having started off with a toss of 59.22m (194'-3") before improving to 61.95m on his second throw, 62.95m on his third and 65.24m on his fourth toss. The Fox River Grove, Ill., native's previous career best was 66.86m (219'-4"), which stood as the third-furthest mark in program history.
While Hurley has started the day already on an SIU top-10 list for an outdoor event, Omar Rodgers found himself on one after clocking in the eighth-fastest 400-meter hurdle time in program history; a finish that placed the junior second overall.
Kayla Schiera won her first event of the outdoor season after claiming the 3,000-meter steeplechase at a time of 10:29.73. Schiera clocked in nearly nine seconds before her closest competitor in the race. Meanwhile, Dawson Smith set a new PR in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after finishing in third place with a time of 9:21.92.
Day two of the Rock Chalk Classic begins at 11 a.m. with the start of the women's discus throw with the men's triple jump to follow. Running events begin at 12:30 p.m. with the start of the 4x100-meter relay and end around 4 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay races.
