
Swim and Dive set to Compete at MAC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men's swimming and diving team is set compete at the Mid-American Conference Championships from April 8-10 (Thursday-Saturday) at the Miami University Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio. CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Salukis have brought the most team collective points at the MAC Championships since joining the conference in 2009. Hosting the championships at home, Southern placed third with 622 points last year. Breaking a two-year drought, the Salukis saw three swimmers tabbed First-Team All-MAC, including sophomore Adam Cernek. Junior Zheng Yang Yeap was named to Second-Team All-MAC status, along with two other graduated Salukis.
TOP DAWGS
The Salukis saw numerous outstanding performances and career bests all season, specifically from the newcomers. Freshman Marc Avery battled for the best Saluki time all season in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and freshman Gustav Persson has become Southern's breaststroke leader, taking top spots in the event all year and swimming the breaststroke leg in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. Sophomore Sam Flessner has been swimming the distance, earning his new personal best in the 1000-freestyle event against Evansville.

WEEKLY HONORS
In the shortened and delayed season, freshman Austin Kinsler was the lone MAC Swimmer of the Week, earning his first of his career on March 17, with his performance against Valparaiso the previous Friday. The all-around swimmer garnered a first-place finish for SIU in the 1000-freestyle (9:54.67), improving his previous timing by over 10 seconds. Kinsler also competed in the 200-breaststroke event with a fourth place finish (2:11.02) the 200-IM, and as a member of the 400-freestyle relay team in exhibition.
BREAKING RECORDS
Cernek, who was 2020's MAC Freshman and Co-Swimmer of the Year, broke his own school record in the 200-yard backstroke at last year's event (1:44.29). The Slovakia native has earned first-place tabs in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events all season, falling behind to his best time in the 200 by only 1.14 seconds.
AGAINST THE MAC
The men's team finished 3-1 against MAC competition during the regular season. SIU recorded a dual-meet victory against Evansville and also bested the Aces in their last meet of the season in Carbondale. The Salukis fell at Ball State in February, while topping rival Missouri State for the first time since 2006
