OXFORD, Ohio — Junior Zander Minano took home gold for SIU, breaking the school record in the 50-yard freestyle event, as the Salukis saw success and tallied big points on day one of the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by Miami of Ohio.
Minano, a Division II Colorado Mesa transfer, swam a 19.90 -- out-swimming the previous record set in 2016 by .02 seconds, while teammate freshman Donat Csuvarszki followed behind for a third place finish in the 50-free clocking in a career-best, 20.06.
Sophomore Adam Cernek swam a season-best 1:48.92 for a fifth place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, just inching toward his personal best set last year.
The relay team of Csuvarszki, Minano, Marc Avery, and Cernek battled in the 200-yard freestyle relay, improving from a previous best-time of 1:23.93 and settling for second place at 1:19.66 to gain team points for SIU.
Sitting in third place, SIU will be back in action tomorrow for day two at the MAC Championships, which will feature seven finals events. Preliminary events will begin at 9:30 a.m, followed by finals events at 5:30 p.m.
