CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU's women's soccer team fell 0-1, to Illinois-Chicago on Friday, the team's final home exhibition match before the start of the regular season next week.
"They [UIC] played in a system you don't see often -- seven on the attack." noted head coach Grant Williams. "That stretched our kids out a bit and that's what you want out of a preseason game. I thought we had a much better second period and start of the third, the team is healthy, and it's a quick turnaround to play on Sunday."
In an effort for learning and more breakage in play, the match was played in three 30-minute periods instead of the traditional collegiate format of two 45-minute halves.
"You want to have opportunities to talk to and adjust your team in exhibitions. I let them play on during the first period, then we got together to adjust ourselves to their position. This provides some flexibility to do some teaching during exhibitions."
The lone goal of the contest was off the foot of Flames midfielder Makena Shaw in the 71st minute, off on the attack from a UIC corner to the Saluki goal. Freshman keeper Ary Lougher started and played a full 90 minutes - the first of her young career. The New York-native notched sevens saves, with blocks by defenders Georgina Franco and Katy Quinn.
On the attack, the Salukis came in full force matching UIC's shots at nine, with the forward line marking on-goal four times. In the preseason match-up, all five freshman saw game time, with 19 Salukis seeing the field at Lew Hartzog.
The Salukis final exhibition match is on the road in Nashville, where the Dawgs will meet the Belmont Bruins on Sunday, August 15 at 6pm.
