CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program began its 2022 indoor season last weekend with a Maroon vs. White Intrasquad meet at the SIU Student Rec Center.
This was the first real action for the Salukis as they prepare for the upcoming indoor season, which continues this weekend with a trip to Terre Haute, Indiana for the John Gartland Invitational on Saturday.
"It's nice to come off a long break and just get in uniform," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Rosalind Joseph. "See what your teammates have been doing during break, see how your fall training has progressed with not necessarily the pressure to perform on the road. It's also a good way to support one another across all events."
Although the competition was against familiar faces, the ability to finally compete head-to-head offers benefits to the team with a common goal in sight.
"It's nice because they get to support one another across all events. Who has the better "shot putter", who has the better "high jumper", etc. It allows us to push each other in a competitive setting, but we know ultimately all the results will count for our team come championship time," said Joseph.
In addition to the intrasquad meet last weekend, Throws Coach J.C. Lambert took a group of Salukis to compete in the Commodore Challenge, hosted by Vanderbilt University. Kicking off the events in Nashville was the women's weight throw. Elisia Lancaster placed 2nd in the event with a mark of 72'7", which was a personal best for her in the weight throw. Shauniece O'Neal and Bri'yanna Robinson placed 4th and 5th respectively, with marks of 65'11" and 64'1.75". Robinson's 19.55m mark was also a personal best. During Day 2 of the Commodore Challenge, both A'veun Moore-Jones and Robinson competed in the women's shot put finals. Moore-Jones finished in 3rd place in the event with a toss of 53'8.50". Robinson placed in 5th with a mark of 51'6.50".
With the season about to ramp up, the early action for the Salukis offered the chance for the coaching staff to assess the team and put an eye on the ultimate goal of a MVC Championship come late February. "We put some throwers on the road to Vanderbilt this past weekend, trying to get a national mark-which I think went really well. Now we'll get to see where everyone else is and what we need to work on as we near MVC championships," said Joseph.
