Salukis Move to 6-1 in MVC Play With Win Over Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team continued a hot start to Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday, defeating the University of Evansville Purple Aces 75-62 in Evansville. The Salukis (11-6, 6-1) are the only one-loss team in Valley play and currently sit atop the MVC standings.
"It was a physical ballgame," said head coach Cindy Stein. "You saw two teams fighting after every rebound, every loose ball."
The two teams shot a combined 51 free-throws and scored a combined 70 points in the paint. Southern won the rebounding battle 40-28, led by Abby Brockmeyer with 14 boards. Brockmeyer also scored 19 points on the day, securing her ninth double-double of the season.
The Salukis were led in scoring by Makenzie Silvey with 23 points. Silvey is the MVC's leading scorer in conference play, averaging 17.5 points per game. Joining Brockmeyer and Silvey in double-figures was Gabby Walker with 17 points. Walker also pulled down eight rebounds.
Southern grabbed eight steals and forced the Purple Aces to turn the ball over 15 times, scoring 20 points off of said turnovers. The Salukis led for over 37 minutes in the contest, never trailing after the 3:36 mark of the first quarter.
The Salukis will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 4 against Missouri State for a 6 p.m. matchup in Banterra Center. The two teams will then play again on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
