Women's Basketball to Host Missouri State Friday Night

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will play the first of two games in three days against the Missouri State Lady Bears on Friday in a 6 p.m. matchup in Banterra Center. The contest is a battle between two of the top teams in the Missouri Valley Conference; the Salukis lead the MVC as the only one-loss team with a 6-1 conference record, while the Lady Bears are just behind Southern in the standings with a 6-2 MVC record.
The Salukis boast the top-3 scorers in MVC play: Makenzie Silvey (18.3 ppg), Abby Brockmeyer (17 ppg) and Gabby Walker (15.4 ppg). Brockmeyer also leads the conference in rebounding with 10.4 boards per game. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears are led by 2021 MVC Player of the Year Brice Calip.
Friday's matchup is between two of the MVC's best teams in the post. Missouri State leads the conference in offensive boards, while Southern ranks second. The Lady Bears are second in rebounding margin, while the Salukis rank third. Southern has won the rebounding battle in 13 of 17 games this season.
Southern's last win over Missouri State came on Jan. 17, 2020. Walker scored the game-winning bucket with one second left in the game to secure the 70-68 victory. The Lady Bears were ranked #17 at the time, making this win Southern's first over a ranked opponent since 1991.
