CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team notched its seventh Missouri Valley Conference win on Friday in Banterra Center, knocking off the Missouri State Lady Bears by a score of 65-49. The conference-leading Salukis (12-6, 7-1) outscored the Lady Bears 19-6 in the fourth quarter to lock down the victory.
"We played gritty and came up with some big plays," said head coach Cindy Stein. "Our defense was solid, especially in the fourth quarter. We came ready to play, and I think that's what I'm most proud of."
Southern shot 9-of-14 from beyond the arc, including a perfect 3-of-3 in the fourth quarter. Coming into the game, Missouri State was second in the nation in three-point defense with an opponent three-point percentage of 22.6%. Makenzie Silvey connected on four of her six three-point attempts, helping her to a team-high 20 points scored in the game.
"Makenzie sees adjustments out there on the floor. Her basketball IQ is extremely high, probably one of the highest basketball IQ kids I've ever had," said Stein. "She found a way to get in rhythm, found a way to score, to have an effect on the game. That's what makes her so good."
The Salukis dished out 17 assists in the game, led by Gabby Walker and Abby Brockmeyer with six assists each. Brockmeyer set a new career high with that mark, while Walker tied her career high. The duo also led Southern in rebounds, with Walker grabbing 10 and Brockmeyer pulling down nine. Walker achieved her second double-double of the season, scoring 13 points in the contest.
"Your players have got to make plays, and you've got to put them in a situation where they can make those plays," said Stein. "That's what Abby, Gabby and Makenzie do: they make plays and they work within what you're trying to do. They know when they need to step up, and they know when they sometimes need to let somebody else have a good look."
Also scoring in double figures for the Salukis was Quierra Love with 12 points for her second-highest total of the season. Love also tallied a season-high 36 minutes played.
"I think Quierra being able to control the offense and get the ball up the floor against the press was huge for us," said Stein. "She made some really special plays today."
"She's the quickest defender in the league; I think she's the best point guard in the league," said Silvey. "She can really do it all for us."
Freshman Tyranny Brown set a new career high with eight points scored, while fellow freshman Laniah Randle contributed five rebounds, a block and a steal in 17 minutes on the floor.
"Tyranny and Laniah coming in definitely helped us," said Stein. "Tyranny hitting those threes and Laniah defensively getting a hand on a lot of balls and making them have to take time off the clock; those are just things that really helped throughout the course of the game."
The Salukis are back in action once more against the Lady Bears in Springfield, Mo. on Sunday for a 5 p.m. tip.
