SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team fell in a 53-52 heartbreaker against the Missouri State Lady Bears on Sunday. The back-and-forth contest saw nine lead changes, with neither team leading by more than eight points at any point.
"It was a really physical game; I loved how our kids battled," said head coach Cindy Stein.
That physicality resulted in a combined 39 fouls called on the two teams, forcing each team to heavily utilize reserves. Four Saluki non-starters played at least nine minutes in the game.
"I thought our bench was outstanding, coming in and making great contributions defensively and offensively," said Stein.
Freshman Laniah Randle tied her career high in points with 10 in over 21 minutes played off the bench. Randle was one of three Salukis to score in double figures.
Southern was led offensively by Abby Brockmeyer, who put up 19 points of 6-of-10 shooting. Makenzie Silvey scored 15 points, and shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Southern as a team shot 54.5% from three, the second-straight game with outstanding long-range shooting after hitting nine three-pointers on Friday against the Lady Bears.
The Salukis (12-7, 7-2) are one of three two-loss teams in Valley play, joined by Illinois State and Northern Iowa atop the MVC standings. Southern will next be in action on Wednesday at Indiana State for a 5 p.m. tip.
