
Salukis to host Tennessee State on Field Trip Day

The Southern Illinois Salukis had a record-breaking performance in their last outing against Chicago State as they'll look to continue their offensive firepower Wednesday against Tennessee State.
The Salukis take on the Tigers at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the annual Field Trip Day game at the Banterra Center. More than 4,000 area elementary school students will be on hand to cheer on Southern, along with getting to watch a halftime show featuring the Ready Go Dog Show.
Against Chicago State, Southern beat the Cougars 115-57 on Thursday, breaking the record for the most points scored in a game in program history. The Salukis also nearly broke records for assists and field goals made in a game as they dished out 29 assists on 40 made buckets.
Ashley Jones scored a career-high 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting to lead the Salukis as she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday.
Jones, along with Aja Holmes (19 points, 6 rebounds), Promise Taylor (15 points, 7 rebounds), Seairra Hughes (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Laniah Randle (10 points, 5 rebounds) finished in double digits for the Salukis.
Quierra Love had a career-high eight assists while freshman Jaidynn Mason finished with seven assists in the win.
On the year, Jones leads SIU with 15.2 ppg while Taylor (11 ppg) and Tyranny Brown (10 ppg) are averaging at least 10 points for Southern. Taylor and Randle are each averaging 6.3 rpg.
Tennessee State comes into Carbondale at 4-3 and winners of back-to-back. The Tigers have wins over Lipscomb, Omaha, Trevecca Nazarene and Fisk with losses to Kansas City, Chattanooga and Butler.
Gia Adams (17.4 ppg) and Erica Haynes-Overton (13.7 ppg) lead the Tigers in scoring while Sierra McCullough (8.4 rpg) leads them on the boards.
The Tigers are led by Ty Evans who is in his third year at the helm. With a 4-3 record this season, Evans is 16-44 in his career at TSU. Prior to his time in Nashville, Evans was the associate head coach at Auburn.
