Salukis to Host Drake for SIH Blackout Cancer Game Sunday
02/12/2022 | 12:00:00 | Women's Basketball
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team hosts Drake on Sunday at 2 p.m. for its annual Blackout Cancer game. Saluki Athletics partners with Southern Illinois Healthcare each year for games during Football, Men's Basketball, and Women's Basketball season, in which fans bid on the game-worn jerseys. The proceeds raised go to benefit the SIH Cancer Institute, which provides quality state-of-the-art care, close to home, for cancer patients, caregivers and their families.
The Salukis (14-7, 9-2) are coming off a wire-to-wire 64-60 home victory over Northern Iowa on Friday. The Salukis were led in scoring by Makenzie Silvey with 17 points, while Abby Brockmeyer scored 16 and had a game-sealing block on Northern Iowa's final possession of the game. Prior to Friday, Northern Iowa had won nine-straight games against Southern.
Southern was victorious in their last meeting with Drake, a 60-49 win on Jan. 13 in Des Moines at the Knapp Center. Silvey led the way for the Salukis scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 boards. This win snapped a 12-game Bulldog win streak in the series; coming into that game the Salukis hadn't won against Drake since Jan. 1, 2016.
The Salukis' 9-2 start to conference is the program's best since the 2006-07 team that won the regular season MVC title.
